How to volunteer

STORYBOOK CHRISTMAS
>> Back to the main page

I t takes many pairs of hands working together to place exciting new books into the hands of McLennan County children who don’t have books of their own. Every type of business and organization, large or small, can help. The ways in which a group can help are limited only by the imagination of the participants. Here are some ideas that have worked each year:

Ways to help A Storybook Christmas

Have a “book meeting” at civic and cultural groups to which members bring either a new book or money to buy books. Consider doing this quarterly.

Have a “book Sunday” at your church, or a “Book Day” at your office, where members or employees bring new books and money to put in a gift-wrapped box in your church lobby or business break room.

Collect aluminum cans all year long at places of business, at home and at church. Take them to a recycling place that pays for aluminum and give the proceeds to Storybook Christmas.

Have a “no bake bake sale” at which people don’t bake anything, but bring the recipes instead, probably several copies of each. People either bid on the recipes, or buy them outright. The proceeds go to Storybook Christmas.

Put a glass jar on a Sunday School Class teacher’s desk and ask members to drop in money at each class session. Or do the same thing at work by placing jars on supervisors’ desks. You’ll be surprised what the total will be in a short time.

Spread the word about the project. Whenever you hear people talking about what to do for a family or company or club holiday project, tell them about Storybook Christmas. It’s fun and very, very easy.

Storybook Christmas takes funds and books all year round. Encourage contributions in honor of people who are celebrating anniversaries or birthday or in memory of people who have passed away who loved books, reading and children.

Volunteer to put bookplates in the front of each new book.

Sponsor a book fair with proceeds going to Storybook Christmas.

The quickest way to help is financially. Take up a collection at a meeting for A Storybook Christmas. Even $1s and $5s add up quickly. Several area families opt to select and donate books for the project rather than to exchange small gifts.
