A nd what do the youngsters who receive the books think about them? One principal told me that on the first day school resumes in January, she always has a line of bright-eyed children waiting outside her office, proudly clutching their new books in their arms, all waiting to read them to her.
As I was visiting the schools taking pictures of the children receiving their books, a little girl told me, “This is my THIRD BOOK and I can’t wait to learn to read it to my Mom. You see, she can’t read.”
That’s what this Storybook Christmas is all about. Can you imagine where WE would all be if The Little Engine That Could hadn’t chugged its way into our childhood? Hadn’t huffed and puffed to give us that little push to reach the top, to tell ourselves “I think I can! I think I can!”
