Itasca running back Desmond Guy and linebacker De’Veon Mayberry, two of the biggest contributors to the Wampus Cats’ 10-0 regular season were rewarded as first-team selections to the AP Class 1A all-state team Sunday.
Guy rushed for 1,895 yards and 26 touchedowns and added four more scores on punt returns, while Mayberry finished with 150 tackles, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Meridian defensive lineman Damian Allen, who recorded 98 tackles and five sacks, was also a first-team pick.
Meridian linebacker Bradley Hardcastle and wide receiver Torrance Allen were second-team choices, along with Evant quarterback Aaron Doyle, Mart defensive back Colby Summers and Italy punter Jasenio Anderson. Torrance Allen was also an honorable mention selection as a defensive back.
Other are players receiving honorable mention include Itasca offensive lineman Cris Pacheco, Bosqueville wide receiver Cody Feight, Bremond quarterback LiDarral Bailey, Mart quarterback Xavier Williams, Bremond defensive linemen Trenton Anderson and Jacob Yezak, Meridian defensive lineman Austin Townley and Bremond linebacker Justin Williams.
Cayuga running back Traylon Shead was named the offensive player of the year after racking up 2,339 yards and 39 TDs rushing. Cayuga will face Stratford for the 1A Division II championship Saturday.
Canadian linebacker Jed Rankin was selected as the defensive player of the year with 118 tackles and 10 sacks. Canadian knocked off Mart, 38-7, for the Division I championship.
