The Midway tennis team went into a raucous environment in Corsiana on Tuesday and claimed its seventh consecutive district title.
The Panthers completed a perfect 6-0 run through 16-4A play by defeating the Tigers, 10-5, to earn a free pass to the Region II team tennis tournament in Grapevine, Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
“The whole team played a role in our success,” Midway coach Troy Simonek said. “They have really pushed each other, stayed driven, and continue to strive towards their goals as a team.”
Corsicana, which entered Tuesday’s match with a 10-0 mark, will need to win the District 16-4A tournament to join Midway at the regional tournament. The Panthers receive a bye to regionals as the district champion.
Midway won doubles, 5-2, and closed out the Tigers with a 5-3 margin in singles play.
The doubles teams of Kolby Kilgo and Frankie Allinson, Evan Clark and Mitchell Myers, Kenna Kilgo and Jessica Sawyer, Mary Beth Green and Danielle Zimmerman and Carina Mooslechner and Spencer Carlisle each earned points for the Panthers.
“I felt this was the best we have all played as a team in doubles to this point of the season,” Simonek said. “Kilgo and Allinson are having an awesome season in doubles. They are 18-0 and have defeated many great doubles teams from around the state.”
Tallying singles points for Midway were Allinson, Kolby Kilgo and Kenna Kilgo, Sawyer and Mooslechner.
