COPPERAS COVE — The return of Robert Griffin was a dream for Copperas Cove and a nightmare for the visiting University Trojans.
Griffin, who was ejected early in Cove’s upset loss to Brownwood last week, ran for two first-quarter touchdowns and later passed for two more as eighth-ranked Cove blew past University, 48-21, in District 16-4A play Friday night.
Copperas Cove (6-1, 1-1) built a quick 21-0 lead behind Griffin’s jaunts and a 21-yard TD run from Troy Vital. University responded in the second quarter with a 23-yard scoring strike from Randy Price to Vencent Finley, but the Trojan defense just couldn’t slow down Cove’s vaunted rushing attack, which accumulated 373 yards for the game.
Price, University’s sophomore QB, showed flashes of brilliance in defeat for the Trojans (1-6, 0-2), passing for 176 yards and three touchdowns, all of which went to Finley, who racked up 132 yards on seven catches.
Vital ran for 148 yards and Griffin added 127 for Cove, which managed to overcome 110 yards in penalties.
