GIDDINGS — Midway didn’t earn a victory Friday, but it might have won some respect from Giddings.
A year after Giddings ruined the Panthers’ homecoming, Midway stayed close to the state’s No. 1-ranked Class 3A school before falling, 28-14.
Giddings beat Midway, 45-7, last season in Hewitt.
The Panthers (3-2) trailed just 10-7 entering the fourth quarter after John Hubert scored on a two-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.
Giddings extended its lead to 21-7 on a 30-yard field goal, followed by a 45-yard touchdown run by Brock Fitzhenry, who had 223 yards and three scores in the game.
Midway pulled within seven when Josh Williams hauled in a 69-yard touchdown pass from Corey Holmes.
However, Fitzhenry’s 17-yard score with 2:26 to play sealed the win.
Hubert rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries for Midway, which is off next week before opening District 16-4A play.
