Study voting records

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, has adequately represented his district. He has a fine record on constituent services. He has gotten his share of earmarks and has done other good things.

Now he advertises how he has “stood up” to House Leader Nancy Pelosi and President Obama. In the words of Hillary Clinton, one would have to suspend disbelief to accept such a statement. This representation has been made from a man who was on the short list for vice president.

Regarding legislation, Pelosi only brings a bill to the floor after she has secured enough Democratic votes for passage. Democrats in conservative districts are then released to vote against the legislation. The proof is in the pudding. How many times has Chet voted against Democrat legislation when the legislation failed?

Chet has been good for his district. But he’s truly a Democratic team player. The question is whether the Democrats are good for the old U.S.A.?

* * *

There has been a great deal of publicity about one of our candidates supporting veterans. It seems some folks will vote for this person simply for this reason. While his help is commendable, the candidate should be judged by what he has done for all Americans.

We should examine his voting record on economics, pork-barrel spending, immigration and foreign assistance. If your candidate demonstrates he has expressed the wishes of his constituents, only then should he get your vote.

A mammoth column

Napa Valley Register reporter Jennifer Huffman’s guest column on Monday [“A mammoth visit to Waco”] was a wonderful endorsement of the mammoth site for out-of-town (and out-of-state) visitors!

I am sure that her column will do more for the tourism business here in Waco than can be imagined.

It is sure better to be remembered for that and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, the Dr Pepper Museum and other great Waco places such as Cameron Park than for the drinking water.

Hopefully, that problem has been solved and it will become just a distant memory. Too many times, when we say where we are from, that is what is mentioned — or else the Mount Carmel standoff is brought up.

We have much more to offer than that here.

Limit immigration

In Monday’s paper, John Mabry is quoted as saying he is puzzled that state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson would rank the border issue above balancing the budget.

Well, if we put a stop to illegal immigrants, then, yes, it would help balance the budget to some degree.

We would not have illegals over here having babies for free, getting other free medical treatments, costing taxpayers money to school them, getting food stamps, welfare checks and our jobs.

If they were all sent back to Mexico, then the people here who are on welfare and food stamps could be taken off the welfare rolls and put to work.

This is just another example of how stupid our politicians are.
