LETTERS: Readers write us about the Cameron Park cliffs, the federal bureaucracy and Tea Party activists

Stay off the rocks

I read the Feb. 15 Trib story, “Cold, rain likely spurred Cameron Park rock slide,” and saw mention of danger on the River Trail. I greatly discourage the city of Waco from closing or blocking the trail or area. It’s too beautiful and wonderful a place to limit or deny access to the public.

There’s danger in everything and everywhere. Humans must be responsible for themselves and their actions. A falling rock is a falling rock. No one caused it, and the city is certainly not responsible.

As for anyone who fell from Cameron Park cliffs and the families who sue over it, I’d have to say if you don’t realize you can kill yourself by falling off a 150-foot cliff, then we probably don’t need your genetics in the gene pool.

The only way anyone ever fell off one of the cliffs was by being someplace they shouldn’t have been. It’s as simple as that.

Or put another way: Don’t blame someone else or another entity for something caused by an individual’s own foolish action.

Liberals and liberty

In reference to the Feb. 12 guest column by Jody Money that asserted “GOP acts more like Arafat than President Reagan,” I beg to differ. Money seems to equate moving forward as handing over full and complete control to federal bureaucrats in every aspect of health care and, ultimately, individual liberty.

Why would the GOP partner up with the Democrats in a government takeover of private business, or the obscene cap-and-trade bill, or redistribution of wealth?

Up until a couple of weeks ago, Democrats on Capitol Hill had complete and total control of the federal government and needed no Republican to pass whatever program their hearts desired. Fortunately, the country is in an uproar over the direction these progressives are leading us.

Statism, socialism and communism never succeed in anything but misery and loss of freedom. I’m sure the GOP appreciates the advice that liberals give, along with their warnings.

Beware of Tea Party

In reference to the Feb. 15 letter on the Tea Party convention written by Meg Hillert, I find it exciting to see how Sarah Palin brings tons of attacks that, in the final analysis, show only the left’s fear of her.

At every turn. you see scorn heaped on Palin by many leftists.

They had all better beware the Tea Party movement.

Politicians beware

It’s campaign time, and I am sure everyone is receiving recorded messages from candidates running for office. I’m on the do-not-call list, yet politicians wrote the law to neatly exempt themselves.

Their annoying calls always come during dinner hour. I detest listening to any recorded phone message, regardless of who is calling.

My solution: If any politician calls me with a recorded message, he or she will not get my vote. If one cannot talk to me in person, he does not deserve my vote or my support.
