LETTERS: Readers sound off on immigrant kids, wildlife and the moon
Lunar eclipse
I am a little bit wiser and my faith in God a whole lot stronger after watching the wonder of a total lunar eclipse Tuesday morning.
Words cannot express the feeling of such an incredible experience. I thank God that he made a believer out of me and gave me the privilege of seeing his hand in action.

Amnesty debate
After reading stories in the Trib last week dealing with the congressional defeat of the Dream Act, I write to express my deep dislike and dismay in the unbelievable liberal slant and conservative-bashing that is continually being displayed in this newspaper. Many people consider the Republicans heroes for defeating this horrible legislation, as evidenced by the last election.
In both stories, the students cited are breaking the law. They are so easily identified I cannot understand why they are not arrested and deported. Additionally, these students are taking taxpayer dollars meant for legal residents. They are attending public colleges, which are funded by tax dollars. And I would be willing to bet the farm that they are receiving publicly funded grants and federal aid to assist with their tuition.
Two students featured who are in this country illegally attend the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles. They are taking up valuable positions that should be given to law-abiding children of U.S. citizens.

The Dec. 10 editorial “Forging citizens,” regarding the Dream Act, left me puzzled. If your logic is followed to its natural conclusion, I see the following scenario: I can commit an illegal act, say tax evasion, fraud or some other non-violent crime that enriches me, then give my family all the better things in life and share with them my ill-gotten gains. Then someday in the future, my kids will get to keep what I gave them since they are innocent of my actions? Wow. What a dream that is.
I suspect if this first step to amnesty for illegals passes, there will be lots of parents in other countries who will also see this as a dream and move north.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (Dream Act) was voted down Dec. 18 by the Senate.
Protect wildlife
I want wildlife to stay a part of our planet. It is disturbing to see so much wildlife diminished daily. It seems that every time there is an open area of land, people feel the need to build on it, pushing wildlife out further from its natural habitat.
Wildlife is an important part of our ecosytem. Without it, there is no telling what effect it could have on humans. Conserve the land and keep the planet.
