LETTERS: Readers sound off on Waco's spay-and-neuter law, bicycle paths and Washington crossing the Brazos

Spay and neuter pets

I have been reading stories about the new spay and neuter law. All of my dogs have been spayed. Many years ago, I witnessed a dog in labor for many hours, resulting in a cesarean section. Going through that made me decide to have her spayed.

Recently, your newspaper ran five personal ads for kittens and 34 ads for dogs. The prices ranged from free to $1,200 per animal.

Somehow I don’t really believe those owners who say they are not doing this for money. Something has to be done to stop breeding these animals every time they come into heat.

Bicycle paths

I wrote to the Woodway City Council proposing more bicycle paths, sidewalks and jogging trails. I especially would like a bicycle path on Estates Drive.

Many people ride bikes to work, and there are several recreational cyclists here who could benefit from this.

Many cities provide not only pathways but education and encouragement for cyclists. Amsterdam is one of the leaders with a ridership of 40 percent. Portland, San Francisco and Boulder, Colo., are leaders in the United States. Davis, Calif., with 65,000 residents, has eliminated school buses in favor of bikes and walking.

We don’t have the climate to do this, but just thinking of this is incredible. Austin has a remarkable “Yellow Bike” program growing every year through effort and education. What can we do here?

Think when you vote

When the time comes for you to vote, remember it’s the party of “No” that held up your unemployment benefits. Called you a bum for not taking any job that paid you less than you were getting on unemployment. It has not done one thing but vote its own agenda. The GOP has cost us our jobs, our savings, our families and more than can be listed at this time.

So think about what you need before you make your choice. Two more years of a stalled economy, joblessness, home losses and more if you make the wrong choice. A good job, a home, money in the bank and more if you make the right choice.

I know how I’ll vote. How about you?

Hats off for headline

I laughed out loud when I read the Friday headline, “Washington crossing the Brazos.”  Hats off to the writer. That’s the kind of reference to history we can all appreciate. As a native of Waco and one whose dad, Dr. Milton Spark, served the people of all parts of Waco but had his office in East Waco, I’m delighted this old bridge is back in service.

CLARIFICATION

In our Monday editorial urging caution in expansion of the celebrated International Baccalaureate program at campuses beyond Mountainview Elementary School, we didn’t mean to suggest the current program at Mountainview has been anything but a success. School board member Pat Atkins, among those urging caution with any expansion till factors including cost and preparation are addressed, assures us that the program has gone “very well” at Mountainview.
