LETTERS: Readers sound off on Democrats, Republicans, Bill Flores, Hewitt city leaders and prehistoric mammoths
Lies and ‘Democrat economics’
In my lifetime I have never seen a more arrogant and dangerous government as we have under President Obama and the Democratic majority. I’ve never seen so much lying and contempt for our Constitution.
Spending has put this nation on the verge of bankruptcy. The word “trillion” is tossed about and most people don’t realize its true implications. Think of it as units of time. A trillion seconds is about 32,000 years. Only then might it be easier to understand the destruction that the Obama administration is inflicting on our nation.
The stimulus was a lie. The only beneficiaries were government workers in Washington and union members. The private sector has been severely damaged. My livelihood has been damaged and I am in danger of losing my home.
Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White is a staunch supporter of Obama and believes in his policies.
White would do to Texas what Obama is doing to the nation: utterly destroy it.

Calling for aggressive Democrats
I’m afraid that many of us Democrats are dropping the ball and failing to stand up to the venomous rhetoric on TV, in newspapers and on the Internet.
What do we say when our president is demonized as another Hitler?
One day his enemies trounce him for not being more aggressive; the next they claim he’s leading the country into socialism. Do they favor a theocracy?
The new publishers of the Tribune-Herald once editorialized that they want to “ferret out” conservative viewpoints on the Opinion pages. May I take a lesson from this and say I wish to ferret out more Democratic, yes, and liberal views and see them on the op-ed pages?
If Democrats don’t become more aggressive in print and elsewhere, we will lose the elections in November.
Martha Nichols, Hubbard
Flores not saying anything new
I really don’t get it. I’ve listened to congressional candidate Bill Flores on a couple of occasions. I’ve read his website. And I just don’t get it. He’s not saying anything new. In fact, he’s not saying anything. He’s got the same old tired schtick about cutting spending and taxes and hating the federal government. Yet he offers nothing new.
What is he going to cut? How is he going to balance the budget by cutting taxes? It didn’t work with President Bush, so why would it work for him? Flores sounds like another dogmatic ideologue who stands for everything but accomplishes nothing. Just what we need — another voice screaming and complaining and offering tired old ideas that have been proven wrong.
Instead of worrying about getting the president to Waco, maybe Bill Flores should be specific about how he’s going to balance the budget and protect the border. So far I’ve seen nothing new from him.

City of Hewitt land purchase
I’d like to make some additions to Monday’s letter from M. L. Bennet about the city of Hewitt land purchase. Mr. Bennett, you’re so correct. In 2009, there was a bond vote on the land and building of new city facilities and Hewitt citizens voted the $12.2 million bond down. The council and city manager in all their wisdom circumvented the system, as they tell me, because they could do what they feel is best for Hewitt. They bonded to buy this land for $2.2 million at $186,000 in yearly interest.
I’ve attended many council meetings and voiced my thoughts on this purchase but was not heard. I feel the current facilities are inadequate but the location of City Hall and the fire department on Hewitt Drive is correct. Why not utilize this land, demolish the current buildings and rebuild a facility in the center of the city?
Come to council meetings on the first and third Monday of each month and see how business is conducted. Maybe it’s time for a change in leadership in Hewitt.

Halt Waco Mammoth Site funds
It would be refreshing if the Tribune-Herald editorial board, local civic, educational and governmental organizations and certain well-heeled Waco individuals would pull their collective heads out of the sand — or in this case out of the digs — and realize that We The People (the U.S. government) are bankrupt and can no longer afford to purchase and maintain luxuries such as the Waco Mammoth Site.
The federal government owns way too much land which it cannot maintain — even with the continued generosity of the overtaxed citizens of this country. I would venture to guess most citizens never visit or even use any of these facilities.
I suggest all of you well intentioned folks who champion the mammoth site pony up out of your own wallets the financial resources necessary to totally support the park and quit continually returning to feed at the taxpayers’ trough to finance your pet projects. The trough is empty.
I applaud Sen. Tom Coburn’s efforts to rein in out-of-control, wasteful government spending; I wish Texas was blessed with senators of Coburn’s fiscal intelligence.
Mark Ethridge Woodward, Woodway
EDITOR’S NOTE: U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has placed on hold proposed legislation to designate the Waco Mammoth Site a national monument and eligible for federal funding. Private donors and foundations raised nearly $4 million to complete plans and build Phase I of the project.
