Need a school zone

Midway ISD just opened River Valley Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth- graders on Speegleville Road. The speed limit in front of this school is 50 mph, with many cars going faster.

On Aug. 24, the second day the new school was in session, there was an accident that stopped traffic both ways for almost an hour. Traffic is backed up a half- mile in both directions on a normal morning. People who live in the area cannot get through to go to work.

In the afternoon, cars are zipping past as parents are trying to pick up their kids. It isn’t safe. Why hasn’t the city of Waco put up a school zone at this campus to slow down traffic?

Students who live nearby must walk or be taken to school, and it is dangerous with the heavy traffic, which is normal on this road.

Unless the city makes this a school zone, it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or severely hurt. I live 500 feet from the school. My son and daughter-in-law live beside me and take my granddaughter to school. It is very dangerous with all the morning traffic just to get on the road.

Is this really news?

The Tribune-Herald , despite new ownership and management (supposedly), is up to its old tricks: boosting Democrat Chet Edwards. I refer to their successful, time-tested pattern of furnishing free advertisement for our well-funded lifetime congressman with faux “news” stories covering him and his opponents.

The pattern: Edwards holds a press conference or releases a talking-points memo announcing his latest dispensation (earmark) for some favored segment of his constituency, or trashing his GOP opponent with some cheesy accusation. The Tribune-Herald dutifully reports, usually verbatim and with a sizable headline. The news reports appear more frequently as the vote looms. Ever notice?

Investigate these dole-outs and political accusations, then report the findings? Nah, that might help Edwards’ opponent.

Worrisome rumor

Regarding the Aug. 30 story in the Tribune-Herald , “Muslim rumors do not worry Obama,” it is becoming more evident with each day that more and more people feel that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Always in the past, U.S. presidents, regardless of their chosen religions, have proudly participated in at least some sort of Christmas services, even visiting churches not of their own denomination.

However, it is disturbing to me that Obama and his family did nothing of the sort — and in light of the rumors, I have to wonder why they didn’t.

It might not worry Obama, but, frankly, as an American citizen, it worries me.

Waco Today ad

If I ever need to pour a concrete walkway, I’ll call the construction firm that advertised the solid truth in the August issue of Waco Today by listing the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 3:11.

Just letting your advertisers know that we do read the small print.
