LETTERS: Readers sound off about car recalls, nasty cartoons, nastier theater productions and health care reform
Trouble with GM car
I recently encountered a problem with my Chevrolet Cobalt. Power steering on the Cobalts is not hydraulic. GM decided to go with electronic power steering instead. Sometimes the power steering will stop working during driving. This happened to me while driving down Interstate 35.
I researched this on the Internet and found it’s a common problem with the Cobalts. Some people have even had serious accidents because of this.
A local Chevrolet service department official told me they’re aware of the problem but that no recall has been issued. How come we have all this media attention on Toyotas but no mention of a problem like this?
It’s ironic that American motor companies were quick to ask for bailouts from our government but won’t stand behind their products.

EDITOR’S NOTE: General Motors this week issued a recall for 1.3 million Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiacs sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into more than 1,000 consumer complaints of the power steering suddenly ceasing to function.
Clean up cartoons
I object to political and editorial cartoons in the Trib that are cruel and demeaning. For example, why run the recent jab at Tiger Woods that ridiculed his public apology?
When did persecuting a fellow human being, under the guise of “righteousness,” become acceptable in our Christian nation?
We are bombarded today by displays of piety, cynicism, resentment and revenge as people attempt to destroy others politically, personally or any way they can. Our enemies must laugh at the job we’re doing at demolishing ourselves.
We should be about honoring God, dignity, healing, compassion and building our great nation.

‘Filthy’ play language
We attended the play “Kimberly Akimbo” at McLennan Community College, and I was shocked at the filthy language in the play, including many four-letter words and other inappropriate slang. Of the hundreds of plays available for a community college to select from, why was this chosen?
We hear enough “mature language” on TV. MCC is supported by local taxpayer money. Our college students who enjoy drama and theater should not have to project these words before any public audience.
Make better choices for our young people and for us in the future.

Reform health care
When Medicare was introduced in the 1960s, there was the same skepticism, distortion of facts and partisanship that health care reform faces today.
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson, a Texan, signed the Medicare bill that has helped countless Americans.
If Congress can make a progressive step more than 40 years ago, there must be a solution for health care reform in 2010. To Republicans, Democrats and independents: Health care reform is the right thing to do.
