LETTERS: Readers sound off about anti-war protests and health care reform bill passage

Ignoring our cries

The Trib published a March 20 story titled, “War anniversary passes, little noticed,” from the Associated Press. Unfortunately and deceptively, the author wrote his story before the major Iraq war protests had occurred.

In fact, major protests occurred on the 20th in many cities, including Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Austin. The crowd estimate in D.C. was 10,000.

Locally, a protest by the Friends of Peace on March 18 with the theme, “Health care, not warfare,” went unreported by the local media.

At U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards’ office, the group also emphasized its opposition to his continued funding of the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

And it presented a book with the image of 45,000 tombstones, which represented the estimated annual deaths from lack of health insurance (American Journal of Public Health 2009) in the United States, in protest of Edwards’ announced vote against health care reform.

Although the news media may downplay our voices, the peace movement will continue to speak out against the madness of war and the wasting of resources desperately required for human needs.

Socialism begins

The March 16 Trib editorial, “Slaughterhouse,”  was a true work of art.  Those in favor of  President Barack Obama’s health care bill most likely were in favor of his using the Slaughter Rule to get it passed.

However, I predict they’ll sing a different tune once this administration starts using this rule to override proper procedure and pass anything that it chooses to.

Obama’s statement that he’s not concerned with “procedure” was obvious from the start, and it’s the most honest thing he’s said since he took office.

From his abuse of power to the recent bribes to using the Slaughter Rule to push his health care bill down our throats, this bullying administration feels that it’s above the law and can simply ignore and steam-roll over procedures, using whatever means necessary to get its way.

The only reason for passing this bill was so the current administration could say it made history by passing health care reform.

As for making changes after it’s passed, Obama has done little so far that he said he’d do, so why should this be any different?

True socialism for America started Sunday, March 21, 2010.

More corrupt now

The March 19 letter by David Orosz is more of the same crybaby stuff about President George W. Bush that we have heard for two years. Enough already. Every president inherits issues they have to deal with.

Bush and the Republicans made mistakes when they were in power, no doubt about it. However, they are nothing compared to the lying and cheating that are going on in Washington now.

I promise we shall all regret passage of this horrible health care reform bill.

And I will stand with the president who believes and prays to the same God that I do and does not believe in killing babies. You can stand with the other guy.
