East Waco revitalized

Lately there has been a lot of talk about things that have not been done to improve East Waco. But that’s not true. In 2008, one of the most significant highlights of my 80-year-old life was when neighbors and Councilman Wilbert Austin surprised me by doing free beautification repairs to my home.

Austin is not only a great councilman, he is a great community man. He is truly an example of works, not words. I wonder what his opponent would do to make a difference in Waco?

* * *

My wife and I have lived in East Waco for many years and are proud owners of a newly built home, thanks to the city of Waco home ownership program and Councilman Wilbert Austin.

Austin is very active in the community. His opponent, Carol Dugat, has continually mentioned in her blogs about an “extreme makeover” for East Waco, but I have not heard her say what she’ll do to accomplish this. Austin already has initiated an extreme makeover in regard to homeownership for many residents.

Assets and liabilities

How many years did new Baylor University President Ken Starr prosecute President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Whitewater investigation? It seemed endless at the time, but what was the outcome? Nothing.

What was the outcome of Clinton’s impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives? No conviction by the U.S. Senate.

What damage did Clinton’s personal indiscretions do to the Constitution? How did his personal affairs affect the nation’s economy? What disastrously expensive wars did he lead the nation into? And what condition did he leave the national treasury in after eight years?

In Accounting 401, our first task was to make a balance sheet listing assets and liabilities. How would a balance sheet for Clinton’s public life shape up?

My guess would be a very favorable net worth.

Say what you will.

Republican ‘slant’

According to the Trib’s results from the March 2 election, 3,300 people voted in the Democratic primary here.

I’m one of them, and I am very upset about the Republican slant on most everything in the newspaper under the new ownership.

The Trib used to be fairly balanced, but now the editorials, columns, letters to the editor and most news articles reflect Republican interests and ideas.

Please remember there are Democrats living here, also!

Helping Haitians

Jimmy Dorrell and his Mission Waco crew have been going to Haiti with doctors and well-diggers for years to help the country. A group of 25 adults is there now until this weekend, helping earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Another group will leave May 18 for Haiti.

Donations to support their efforts can be made at their Web site at www.missionwaco.org.

God bless Mission Waco.
