Theater adds to our well-being

New research suggests that of all the arts, live theater contributes most to our sense of well-being and quality of life. My quality-of-life meter was off the charts during and after Baylor University Theatre’s recent performance of “Macbeth.” A brilliant staging and updating of the 1606 play “Macbeth” made it come alive for myself and for my students, many of whom avoid Shakespeare like the plague. A fabulous subterranean set replete with contemporary Scottish hooligans in wonderful costume brought home the message: We are punished by, if not for, our sins.

There is some new, exciting and creative energy surging through Baylor theater.

Paying it forward

Many thanks to Richard at Tow King tow service. He was so helpful when my husband had the misfortune of a large, heavy container of oil falling off his truck at a busy intersection. The oil needed to be pumped into another container, and we were attempting to do that when Richard arrived and helped. He also used his truck to lift the unwieldy oil container onto our truck so we could strap it down.

Richard was helpful, courteous and gracious. And he did not ask for money. We hope we will be in a position to pass on this kind of good Samaritan service to someone else in the future. “Pay it forward” becomes a reality when we choose to think about helping others in time of need.

Doing something right

Trib business page headlines on March 12: “Fed data show net worth in U.S. is inching upward,” “Drop in imports shrinks nation’s trade deficit,” “1st-time unemployment claims post slight drop” and “Stocks climb for 3rd day as financial shares rise.”

All good news, correct?

Let’s give credit where credit is due: to the much-maligned current administration, which must be doing something right.

Painful choice made easier

Recentlywe faced a tough decision to put down our dog due to her declining health. Our veterinarian, Craig Williams at South Bosque Veterinary Clinic, was a great help to us. He offered several options to make Abby comfortable in her last days. His staff was caring and compassionate, and they made a very difficult time easier for us.

We will forever be grateful to him.

Care much appreciated

Earlier this month, I became very ill and was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. When we entered the emergency room, a young man we knew, Anthony Collier, came to my aid. He realized that I was not well and, luckily for me, he was in the right place at the right time.

I want to thank Anthony and let Waco know there are wonderful young people ready to help in time of need here. My family also thanks Hillcrest for the wonderful care that I received.

Camp Fire photo memories

I was pleasantly surprised to see the 1948 picture of our Camp Fire group in Trib writer Terri Jo Ryan’s March 6 article on the Hippodrome. My mother, Elizabeth Palmer Thompson (photographed on the far left below), was our leader. In 2000, she was honored as the oldest living Camp Fire girl in the United States.

I look forward to Camp Fire’s 100th anniversary celebration July 31.
