LETTERS: Readers discuss U.S.-made goods, U.S. aid for us and term limits for Congress

Made in U.S.A.

I’m 71 years old and have seen a lot in my years. I watched the president’s State of the Union speech, and I want to remind folks that we have to remember that the president cannot do everything himself.

The government should stop allowing U.S. businesses to ship goods overseas to be assembled there and then shipped back here at higher prices for U.S. citizens.

Whatever happen to “Made in the U.S.A.?” When given a choice, I always buy U.S.-made products.

If the United States wants to get out of this economic mess, we need to help ourselves instead of helping every other country. Otherwise, we’ll become helpless ourselves. Then who will help us?

We have people over here who go to bed hungry. Who is helping them? There are people out of jobs that foreigners get instead.

I’m proud to have lived long enough to see a black president. But we must remember that when he took office, things were turning bad. We should not blame him. And we must remember that he alone cannot fix everything.

More U.S. aid for us

Shame on America. We are the only country where we have homeless people living without shelter, children going to bed hungry and elderly going without desperately needed medications. And some of our mentally ill have no treatment at all.

However, 12 TV stations recently broadcast a benefit for the people of Haiti, which raised millions of dollars. There are ships and planes lined up to take food, water, tents and clothes, as well as medical supplies and doctors to render free aid to Haiti.

Imagine if we gave ourselves the same support that we give all these other countries? Don’t get me wrong. I do feel bad for the people of Haiti. But let’s take care of our own before we spend millions of dollars on others that could have benefited so many here in America.

Term limits needed

I was thrilled to hear that we have a conservative Republican, Bill Flores, running for Congress to represent the 17th District seat. He believes we need to put term limits on Congress.

Both the House and Senate are overrun with representatives whose primary function is to get re-elected. Both Democrats and Republicans are guilty of this.

We the voters are to blame for this. We must vote for the candidate who does what is best for the country as a whole. This would eliminate billions of dollars in pork spending that is bankrupting our country.

We must put term limits on our representatives, as we have done to the presidency. Vote for Flores, who promises to get this done.

Slandering Fox News

I’m amazed at those who, in print or in conversations, readily discredit Fox News.

When I ask, “Do you listen to Fox?” no one has ever replied “yes.” And when I ask, “Then how do you know what they’re saying?” I get blank stares.

I know that those in Washington are proud of this attitude and will only encourage others to keep on slandering Fox News.
