LETTERS: Readers debate English-only talk and other immigration-related issues
English-only debate
In reading the June 1 letter from Martha Gordon [“Learn English!”], I would have swore I had written that letter and forgotten about doing so. The letter is exactly how I feel about the illegal immigration problem.
All of our ancestors were immigrants at some point. The only difference is when they immigrated there were not laws like there currently are. My ancestors can be traced back to 1635, coming here from England.
If people want to come to the United States legally, that is fine. But coming here illegally is not. We have laws that citizens have to abide by, so why don’t immigrants? The illegals aren’t above the rest of us, but they come across like they are. By disobeying our laws and not even trying to learn English, they disrespect our American way of life.
This is an English-speaking country. They can learn our language or they can go back to where they came from.
Some say the illegals do jobs that others won’t do. With the job market the way it is now, I would guess that is not so true anymore. The illegals send a lot of money back to wherever they came from. It doesn’t stay here like it would if the job was held by a citizen of the United States who paid taxes.
The illegals are draining the U.S., and the time has come to put a stop to it.

I totally agree with Martha Gordon. She nailed it right on the head when she said every person who comes to the United States should learn to speak English.
Communication is very important to our country’s success in government, business and everyday talk.
It also goes back to securing our borders.
Remember when Cuba unloaded their prisoners on us? Look at Florida now. It’s like Little Cuba!
I truly enjoy reading the letters to the Trib. Some are right on the money and some do anger me, but all voices have a right to be heard.

In response to the spirited letters regarding school safety and English only, I would ask that readers consider the entire situation before making quick judgments.
* First, I am certain these parents would become legal if they could. The immigration process is complex, lengthy and extremely expensive. Many situations exist that are irrational and not easily resolved.
* Second, these parents who do not have Texas-issued identification are wanting to plan an active role in their children’s lives by visiting school campuses. Where is the harm in that? They should be admired, not criticized.
* Third, I am certain that teachers would welcome anything encouraging parental involvement. Language should not be excluded. What benefit is there in prohibiting a second language?
Keep it bilingual, I agree. But do not exclude. Being bilingual is an asset, not a disservice. I am sure many business owners would agree with this.
Our nation is built on these principles of cultural diversity and family values. For that we have been richly blessed.
Let’s not allow our pride to interfere with what has enabled this country to flourish.
