LETTERS: Questioning allegations against Bill Flores, interviews with candidates and online commenting

Flores was joking

I read the Trib’s Saturday story concerning allegations that GOP congressional candidate Bill Flores lied when he claimed in January that he had voted in 2008 for candidate Rob Curnock [“Records contradict candidate’s vote claims”].

I was sitting next to Flores at the Roosevelt Hall Debate when he was asked whom he voted for in the last two elections. Flores was joking when he responded that he had voted for Curnock. On the video, it’s evident he was chuckling when he answered this question. So was I and most everyone in the room.

It’s obvious that campaign staff for U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards have fired into action. And a liberal political action committee in Washington is doing opposition research and conducting political attacks on Bill Flores.

I’m not surprised Flores is drawing fire from the Democrat attack machine during a runoff election. He is by every conceivable measure the strongest remaining GOP candidate.

It’s not normal for incumbent Texas congressmen to have their re-election campaign machinery in high gear before the bluebonnets reach full bloom. Edwards recognizes he is in big trouble if Flores wins the runoff election. That’s no joke.

Questionable Q&A

As I was undecided as to which candidate to support in the Republican runoff to challenge Chet Edwards for the Congressional District 17 seat, I was interested in the Q&A columns on the two candidates in Sunday’s Trib.

But here’s what I gleaned:  Rob Curnock was asked 14 questions, mostly personal and contentious in nature, and given 31-column inches to answer the attacks. Bill Flores was asked six softball questions and given 36-column inches to respond.

Taking into account the Trib editorial that also ran Sunday endorsing Flores and referring to his views as “nuanced,” I’m now leaning toward voting for Curnock.  This is one voter who has had enough nuance. I want plain-spoken integrity.

Lady Liberty weeps

In response to Karen Bell’s April 4 letter, what makes Lady Liberty weep is listening to all the misinformation given out about the health care bill by the president and other liberals.

Those who take the time to read the entire bill with an open mind can see it will cost trillions of dollars more than was reported.

‘Man Bears?’ No way

Could Bob Vickrey kindly refrain from voicing his delusional opinions in the Trib [“We don’t say ‘Man Bears,’” March 14]? Man Bears, really? We don’t call our Lady Bears “Women” Bears or the men’s team Gentlemen Bears.

Lady Bears is quite appropriate. They’re a great group of young athletic ladies.

Online comments end

I’m puzzled that the Trib no longer allows comments on its online articles on its Web site. Why not just require the same information required for publication of letters to the editor in the print version?
