LETTERS: Political endorsements are offered for Chet Edwards, Judge Felipe Reyna and Brad Cates
Political endorsements
I didn’t like U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards’ vote against health care, but I will vote for him, and not just because of the GOP alternatives but because Edwards made the health care vote in spite of what his party wanted. Edwards didn’t make the political vote, he made the policy vote and voted “no.”
Would any of the five Republican candidates ever vote against their party? During the recent debate, they vowed to never compromise. Clearly, conservative politics are more important to them than policy merits.
They are not the solution, they are the problem. They would never be able to find compromise because they want to destroy all who disagree with them. Edwards’ track record is one of voting his conscience, not his politics, and if we want Congress to set a different path, then we need people who can set aside their ideologies and do the work of the people.

Why should Waco voters care what Dr. John Coppedge of Longview, treasurer of the Texas Bipartisan Justice Committee, had to say about Judge Felipe Reyna in a Feb. 21 letter?
Coppedge is obviously upset that Judge Reyna didn’t turn out to be a rubber-stamp judge. So it looks like the good doctor is now betting on a new horse.
Coppedge has every right to push his personal opinion and private agenda, but thank heaven for judges who understand they can’t put their personal opinions and agendas ahead of the law. Thank you, Judge Reyna, for being an honest and honorable man. The people of your district know you, respect you, and will vote on March 2 to keep your independent voice on the court.

As a fellow attorney and member of the same church, I have had the pleasure of knowing Brad Cates for nearly 30 years. His years of courtroom and jury trial experience far exceed that of his opponent, and experience certainly does matter when selecting a judge.
Brad has superior knowledge of the law, sound judgment, unquestionable integrity, the respect of his peers, and a great work ethic. Vote for Brad Cates for judge of County Court at Law No. 2.

Logic questioned
I question the logic of Trib agriculture columnist Bobby Horecka in his Feb. 21 column “Catching the big change in drift.”
I disagree with his attempts to support the way farmers use chemicals. Could one not use that same argument to defend a driver who used a legal chemical like alcohol and allowed his car to “drift” into the opposite lane, causing a collision?
If a farmer should not be held liable for his careless use of chemicals, couldn’t the same argument be used to protect the drinker from the consequences of his actions?
Some of us favor placing the health and safety of our neighbors above the interests of a few chemical-users.
