Democrats: Come out

I seldom read much about the McLennan County Democratic Party but was excited to read recently that there are three candidates running for the open chair.

I’m terribly outnumbered in my district by Republican voters. I’m proud to be a Democrat. Unfortunately, most of my neighbors aren’t as proud of me. I am guilty of apathy, but I want to make an attempt to be more vocal.

The three candidates are Karen Petree, 25; Roy Walthall, 53; and Kelvin Williams, 47.  I’m sure they are all fine citizens. (They are Democrats, after all.) But I would like to offer my endorsement for Karen Petree.

I’m a middle-class mom from Hewitt, an admitted feminist, and I have never met Petree. I like her because she wants the job. She is a young, employed college graduate. Her statement that her “passion is the process” impressed me. She also wants to organize events to help the candidates, and we all know how much the Democrats in this county need help. She has energy and passion.

I know there are Democrats out there who are afraid to come out of the closet. Be brave and cast your vote for Petree. Let’s give this young lady the chance to prove herself and put a fresh face on the McLennan County Democratic Party.

Bizarre lawmakers

Regarding the Jan. 6 Trib editorial on bizarre laws [“That passed?”], this is a prime example of why attorneys should not be elected to any legislature.

Ninety percent of all laws are not known by 99 percent of the public. And 90 percent of all laws should be thrown out. The majority of honest citizens don’t even know if they’re breaking laws or not.

The days of good judgment are gone. Who did this to us?

When are voters going to wake up and see the light?

Our legal system is destroyed. I say to vote the bums out. Vote against any and all incumbents.

Tide rolled over UT

I’m in total disagreement with Joe Walker’s Jan. 12 letter saying Alabama lacks class. The University of Alabama deserves credit for its victory over the University of Texas.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram also left the game with an injury. Imagine the final score had he played the entire game.

Texas usually dominates every game by capitalizing on its opponents’ mistakes. But its luck ran out against Alabama. Alabama made some key plays that destroyed the Longhorns.

This time an opponent did to Texas what Texas usually does to someone else — put the score out of reach in the closing moments.

The tide turned and swept Texas away. Alabama earned its No. 1 spot.

More Krauthammer!

Why is it that we, as subscribers, have not seen published in the Trib many recent columns by Charles Krauthammer of The Washington Post?

His credentials are impeccable, and his columns accurate. He is popular in our area.
