LETTERS: One reader backs 'Doc' Anderson, another urges national unity, a third suggests a Trib 'truth-meter'
Backing ‘Doc’
I agree with David Orosz’ Feb. 1 letter supporting state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson. Anderson shouldn’t be judged solely on the basis of whether he has or has not paid federal taxes.
He is an honest, hard-working and dedicated public servant who is of impeccable integrity and fortitude.
As the former president of the local Waco chapter of the NAACP, I can attest that every case I have ever turned in to his administration was always handled in a timely, professional manner. His office staff was kind and attentive to all issues that were presented to them. In addition, on two occasions he supported the NAACP by attending A Fund Banquet and the 2009 Martin Luther King wreath-laying ceremony.
No man is infallible. We all have made mistakes at one time or other.
Look yourself in the mirror before passing judgment.
Poet Isaac Watts famously wrote, “The mind’s the standard of the man.”
Anderson is that man and has my unquestionable vote of confidence.

Reconciliation is key
President Barack Obama’s meeting with Republicans during a Jan. 29 GOP retreat in Baltimore was a wake-up call to all of us. We must remember: “United we stand. Divided we fall.” As the president said, both parties are guilty of being politically divisive, and this has aroused the populace, causing divisions and generating fear.
I suggest calling our congressmen and urging them to actively seek to use reconciliation measures between the parties. Our nation’s future is at stake, and we must go forward.

Publish a truth-meter
Two features I’d like to see in the Trib are a weekly rundown of stocks of local interest, especially those based in Waco or those with a Waco presence, and a “truth-meter” review of important political speeches. This would include presidential speeches to the nation, gubernatorial debates, senatorial debates and state House and Senate race debates. The truth-meter should focus on factual accuracy, not whether the Trib agrees with an opinion.

Great orator? OK
I have a question for all those people who are constantly praising President Barack Obama for his eloquent ability as an orator. Are you judging his oration on his stately presentation of the English language or on the content of his speech?
I agree on the first part, but on the second part I am sorely disappointed and often even embarrassed.

Research your vote
As primaries approach, the mailings, phone calls, and signage will begin in earnest. Please remember that your vote is important. Research and cast your ballot based on a candidate’s strengths, not another candidate’s shortcomings.

Driving the agenda
Kudos to Frank Smith’s Jan. 29 letter. The sooner U.S. Sen. Scott Brown gets to the towing, the better.
