LETTERS: New Baylor stadium debate, Governor's TV ad confronting President Obama, defining who is really poor

New Baylor stadium

Baylor is among only a few NCAA Division 1 universities that does not have a football stadium on its campus.

A stadium on campus would increase game attendance due to accessibility for students. It probably would increase enrollment also.

And it would create greater camaraderie between the student body and their beloved football team. Students take pride in their schools’ athletic accomplishments.

It’s time to move the football stadium on campus. Surely someone can come up with a use for the existing stadium. It might even help revitalize Waco.

* * *

Someday Baylor University will probably have a stadium on its campus, but not anytime soon.

In the meantime, let’s fill and enjoy the beautiful, adequate stadium that we have.

A letter writer recently suggested opening the south end zone to combat veterans during games. That’s a great idea, but why not open it for all military personnel and their families?

Or what about offering a modest-priced ticket for those who can’t afford the going rate? There must be many who would like to come but can’t because of the cost.

Governor’s TV ad

I am bothered and bewildered by Gov. Rick Perry’s new TV ad in which he claims to have confronted President Barack Obama about border security.

I am bothered that our governor seems to have no respect for the office of the president of the United States.

I am bothered that our governor would “confront” our president, who was duly elected.

I am bothered that our governor does not respect the office or the man enough to call him by his elected title, President Barack Obama. Perhaps our governor would do better to talk rather than “confront.”

I am bewildered that our governor never confronted President George W. Bush about border security.

I am bewildered that our governor, in the eight years of Bush — when illegal immigration was much worse than it is today — did nothing about border security.

Maybe we need a governor who can work with the federal government. Maybe it’s time for the good governor to exit politics altogether and go home to his ranch.

Defining the poor

I am an advocate for the poor among us who are putting forth an effort to make ends meet. But there a lot of people who expect the government to provide for them. Not everyone who says he’s poor actually is poor.

If they are unemployed because of no fault of their own, then I’m for helping them. If they are unemployed because they would rather mooch off society, then I have no sympathy for them.

Many who have lost their homes to foreclosure did so because they overextended themselves and made poor choices. Why should those of us who are frugal be expected to bail them out?

A vote for the Democratic Party will only perpetuate the taking of funds from those who go to work every day. We have to remove the insanity in Washington, and the best way is at the polls.
