LETTERS: Nation needs to unite in war efforts; Heimlich-like invention shared with public

We need to unite in patriotism

Tribune-Herald Board of Contributors columnist Jeanie Mercer’s Memorial Day tribute, “Recalling times that united us,” evoked many memories for me. I recall a few other features of life then:

As a teen when Pearl Harbor was attacked, I was aware of a lot of effects that the war produced. The government imposed wage and price controls that reduced the opportunities for profiteering on scarce commodities. Rationing included all canned goods, and empty cans were recycled. Toothpaste tubes were made of tin and were recycled. We had the draft system that mandated all able young men be involved in the war effort.

Everyone in the nation was aware of the need to restrict the release, either purposely or by careless talk, of information related to military activities. A common motto was “Loose lips sink ships.” The media did not supply a lot of vital information to an enemy who might be listening to the radio. Troop movements and deployments were guarded secrets. The nation was united in the war effort, and great sacrifices were made without regret.

Now, it seems few people besides those serving in the armed forces, their families and their friends are fully aware we are engaged in war. We refuse to raise taxes to pay for the huge costs involved. We ignore many of our obligations to the veterans who have sustained physical or mental disabilities. Our industrial complex, especially the petroleum industry, is gaining huge profits from our involvement.

We rely upon the patriotism of many of our young people to sustain the ranks of the armed services. We go on with life almost as if we were at peace with the world except for some inconveniences imposed by security measures. It’s clear that too many of our politicians are Democrat, Republican or tea party first, and Americans second.

Heimlich invention shared

I am 86 years old and have lived alone in Waco since 1965. I have a wind pipe problem and when I read the May 20 article, “Heimlich posters may be on way out,” I wanted to share my invention. The article discussed a bill in the Legislature to eliminate a state rule that requires restaurants to post a sign with instructions on how to do the Heimlich maneuver.

This is my solution that enables me to continue my lifestyle: I bought a hickory hammer handle at a hardware store. I mounted a small rubber ball that I had cut a hole in and glued the ball to the handle. I have no idea what the medical professional’s opinion of this would be, but it works for me! It has seriously enhanced my security blanket for living alone. I hope it may help others.
