LETTERS: More letters about Doc Anderson, plus an insight about Republican hypocrisy

GOP hypocrisy

Recent television coverage of President Obama’s debate with House Republicans at the annual House retreat was the public’s opportunity to see a reasonable, logical, knowledgeable president counter the over-the-top hysteria that many Republicans have greeted Democratic proposed policies and corrections of Bush-era excesses this past year.

With command of the facts, our president pointed out the many misconceptions about health care and stimulus funding that Republicans have been peddling the past year. He rightly noted that many of the House Republicans who voted against the stimulus funding then took credit for the funding of projects in their districts. Our president was so successful in combating many of the ill-informed talking points of his audience that Fox News cut away after an hour of its coverage. Fair and balanced?

To all the Republicans who whined that they were tired of being characterized as the party of “no,” the Republicans demonstrated how they rightly own that title with a Jan. 28 vote: Pay-as-you-go legislation, making certain that any legislation passed be paid for, did not have a single Republican vote for passage. As Obama reminded the House Republicans, they vote, often in lockstep, against proposals they have endorsed in the past.

If Washington Republicans think we do not recognize their hypocrisy, they are mistaken.

Three views on Doc

Mr. Lummus, you are mistaken [Letters, “Give ‘Doc’ the boot,” Feb. 3]. I haven’t asked anyone to write letters for state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson. People are writing letters because Doc has been and is doing a great job.

Then too, maybe folks realize if they don’t vote for Doc, we’ll have another lawyer as our representative and, even worse, two lawyers from the same law firm. Both skipped off to Ardmore, Okla., several years ago to keep from voting. This shut the Texas House down, killed a lot of legislation and cost the taxpayers about $2 million.

Doc isn’t the best choice, he is the only choice.

It is hard for me to believe all of the letter writers who support “Doc” Anderson, a man who has not only not paid all of his income taxes but has not paid the payroll taxes that he has withheld from his employees. This is not his money. It belongs to his employees.

If this was his employees’ money, then this is theft.

Perhaps he gets the idea from our president who appointed a number of people who also did not pay their income taxes. Maybe they’re two peas in the pod.

Let’s get some honorable people in our government.

So Democrats want Doc to resign. Where was the outrage when our treasury secretary was confirmed? How about Democratic congressman Charlie Rangel and his numerous tax problems?

I’m sure Doc will take care of his problems in due time.

Give the guy a break!
