LETTERS: Massachusetts Republican Senate seat win; health care debate; new Trib columnist

Massachusetts victory

Republican Scott Brown’s victory for the Senate seat in Massachusetts is great for the country. Democrats may not admit it, but this is a message from the people.

Hats off to the voters for speaking out against the tyranny in Washington. This country never prospers when the executive and legislative branches are of the same party.

The best thing that can happen in November would be the Republicans taking over the House or Senate. President Barack Obama will still be the leader, but he won’t be able to push bills through with the people blind to what is being thrust upon them.

We need a new health care system but one forged of compromise, not engineered to control the people.

I am so thankful that the “silent minority” is now awake. Like Ray Stevens sings in his popular new song, “We the People,” it’s not possible to stop the Republican Party from being where it needs to be.

Some of our voters are unaware of the damage caused by being uninformed. Some politicians will do anything to get elected.

And if Scott Brown had in some way given thanks to God in his acceptance speech Tuesday night, I believe he could be our next president.

Health care bill

Prior to the 2008 presidential election, we were fed fanciful promises of a new age of openness, transparency,  bipartisanship and cooperation. But these promises all disappeared behind stone walls, closed doors, secret meetings and the total exclusion of Republicans. There were backroom deals and vote-buying that would embarrass a hardened criminal. Any thought of  bipartisanship was completely discarded, and all to cram this abomination of a health care disaster down our throats.

Now we have the election in Massachusetts of a Republican for the U.S. Senate seat. What a shock!

Will they continue to try to force this mess on the American people, or will President Barack Obama suddenly rediscover the need for at least some Republican support? The whole process will be interesting to watch. Let’s hope they junk the present attempt at health care reform and start over, this time with input from both sides of the aisle.

New calming voice

I’m pleased to see that the Trib will be adding Dr. Michael Attas as a guest columnist writing on health care issues. He was my mother’s cardiologist and was always kind, attentive and on time. Punctuality is especially appreciated when caring for someone who is in chronic pain and for whom getting dressed and out the door for a doctor’s appointment is an all-day task.

His varied background will no doubt serve him well in helping to explain the complexities of our current health care crisis.

I’m also looking forward to a civilized community discussion on health care that will perhaps start to replace the more strident tones of late. Let’s all calm down, quiet down and try to hear what each other’s concerns are. Thank you, Trib, for starting this process.
