LETTERS: Larry Kelley speaks out after his saga, plus opinions on loss and the Humane Society
A repentant officer
I want to thank my family, Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT), LaNelle McNamara, Waco Police Association, friends, citizens and co-workers for their support during my legal struggles with the city of Waco.
To all citizens of Waco and police officers in Texas: I am sorry for being DWI that night more than 10 years ago in January 2001. I deserved to be punished and believe I have been punished. My fight with the city of Waco was based on my conviction that civil service is beneficial to citizens, City Hall and police officers. I have been an advocate for citizens and police officers my entire career. I have made a stand for others on issues that I believe in. I did the same for myself as I would for others.
Taxpayers and Waco police unfortunately have to bear the burden of the city of Waco’s decision to appeal every decision or ruling. I never appealed a ruling or a decision, nor will I appeal the July 29 Hearing Examiner’s ruling. I believe that I have fought the good fight.
Dr. William McKee, the hearing examiner, wrote, “Mr. Kelley, other than this incident, served well.” I will leave it to those who knew me and worked with me to judge that for themselves.

A greater loss
The other day, I was feeling sorry for myself after repeated thefts of my business. Recently, the fence to our property was cut and our John Deere tractor was stolen. We used it to carry items weighing hundreds of pounds that needed loading.
Anyone who works in this heat knows how exhausting and strenuous working outside can be. This helped us.
Then I saw a TV report about a disabled Woodway man whose golf cart — that he used to get around in — was stolen.
My heart sank.
I realized that I still have full use of my body and can push and load carts. And my will to continue working was not stolen. But this man’s source of mobility was taken from him.
Nevertheless, he seems to have a strong will and was reported to continue to still get around using an electric wheelchair.
I am impressed and encouraged by his strength.
At least hardworking, honest citizens have something that thieves cannot take: our faith in God and ability to show our love to others by sharing our gifts.
I pray for the return of his golf cart and hope that he maintains his strong spirit.

Humane Society funds
What a shame that the very organization that provides such a service to our community is coming up short of funding. I don’t believe charging county residents a fee to leave animals at the Humane Society of Central Texas would actually increase the number of animals abandoned. Those who abandon animals would do that regardless of costs. But setting a fee will often give people the idea that the shelter has plenty of money to continue caring for these poor, unwanted pets.
Many don’t understand the logistics that go into the operating budget and expenditures involved in running a shelter.
The county should consider what it would cost to build its own shelter. Then maybe they’d realize they’re getting a pretty good deal.
Mary Borrelli, Woodway
