La Vega tax vote

La Vega ISD taxpayers did you know that early voting is going on right now to decide whether to increase your school taxes? The final vote on this increase will be Oct. 2.

The vote is to approve a 12.5 percent increase in the school taxes we pay for maintenance and operations of the district. The board says a reduction in money going into the bond repayment fund will prevent taxpayers from seeing an actual increase and the district should get an additional $1.8 million from the state.

If the state money doesn’t come in, or we get it for only a few years, well, we will have already approved the tax hike. Let’s get involved in this issue.

Impose term limits

Those elected to Congress were sent there to serve and represent us, the people. But many who went to Washington just stayed and served themselves and their political party.

While many voters have argued for congressional term limits there has been little effort to change the system. But then, who makes the rules?

I’m for term limits. If an elected official can’t demonstrate commitment to the people, then we the people need to help them pack up and go home.

If our elected officials say that we control term limits on Election Day, then let’s do it. Let’s put integrity back in office.

Online monitoring

I’m a former resident of Waco. I recently moved to Mexico and am an online Trib subscriber. Since the Trib is my primary source of information for Waco, Texas and the United States, I depend on it to be accurate. Recently I have found numerous mistakes in the section “Texas report from the AP.”

Several times the same articles appear under multiple sections — international, national, sports, offbeat, business, health, technology, and science — and bear no relationship to that section.

Could someone please monitor that section more closely? The rest of the online edition is great but this section needs attention.

Walk for homeless

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Walk for the Homeless on Sunday in Waco. And thanks for buying my lemonade to raise money for Haiti. I did that in memory of my stepdad, Cowboy, and we raised $998!

My mom says that this is enough to help dig a well in Haiti. I am only 11 years old, but some day I want to go and see it. Don’t you?

I also was also happy to see so many of our friends get new shoes. They were so proud.

Teacher pay

An Associated Press story published Wednesday in the Trib [“Study: Teacher incentive pay fails to increase students’ scores,’] stated that teacher pay incentives fail to increase students’ scores. And it mentions our current government’s encouragement to tie pay and tenure on student performances.

Perhaps it is time our government practice the same and officials tie their own salary to their performance?  Let’s even make them take a  pre and post exam of said performance!
