LETTERS: A Bellmead councilman's farewell, plus thoughts on beauty tips, Inter-Library Loan and charitable giving
Councilman deployed
I want to thank the citizens of Bellmead’s Precinct 1 for their support during the past few months. I have enjoyed serving on the Bellmead City Council. However, because of my obligations with the Marine Corps Reserves, I will be temporarily absent from my council seat beginning today.
I have notified the city attorney of my military activation and discussed the actions needed in order to ensure citizens will be properly represented during my military leave. I have been informed that I may recommend someone to temporarily fill my seat until I return. The council, however, is not obligated to use my recommendation. They may decide to leave the seat vacant until I return.
I have strongly suggested to the council to consider Karen Coleman, a local credit union officer, to fill my seat. I believe she would well represent the citizens. She holds similar views to mine regarding city business matters and is an active, strong-minded individual with a great attitude who wants what is best for all of Bellmead. She’s a team player, and I know she would do a great job.
If Coleman is selected by the council, please support her. I plan on keeping close contact with her and help her through this process. I also will stay informed on city business, so I can better serve citizens upon my return.
I look forward to returning and seeing the progress our city has made and to work with the council and the rest of our city soon.
Carlos Luna, Bellmead councilman, Precinct 1
Natural beauty tips
Thanks for running the New York Times article “ ‘Going natural’ requires some help,” in Tuesday’s Trib. What a timely article for us black women who have liberated ourselves from the harsh and damaging effects of chemical processing our unique tresses. I have worn my hair in it’s natural state for four years, and I love it! Not only is it beautiful, but it is convenient and less expensive than costly salon visits.
Although I appreciate that women of color have a plethora of styling options to enhance our hair, there is something to be said for women who are bold and courageous enough to take the natural route to gorgeous hair. I hope my two daughters relish the look and feel of natural hair and know that it is fine just the way it is!

Library request
Why has the Waco library shut down the Inter-Library Loan system? It was suspended in November and never reopened. This was a wonderful community service that saved me hundreds of dollars per year. It opened up library book inventories across the country to users.
Library directors have been unresponsive to email requests asking for this service to be started again. At a time when money is tight for everyone, this would be a great way to help out Waco citizens.
David Murphy, Woodway
It’s fun to enjoy sports and to support our local teams but the realities of life and poverty in our community cannot be ignored. At our house, for every dollar spent on Baylor University sports we now give equal contributions to Caritas. Just a suggestion for others to follow.
