Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints
The Tribune-Herald editorial board this week reveled in the cool temperatures, even as it shooed away smoke from raging wildfires burning up much of the state. Also:
* Sunday we celebrated local companies giving pay raises while acknowledging the challenges facing those that have not, especially as our economy continues to suffer.
* Monday we urged our readers to buy American and buy local.
* Tuesday we voiced faith in a bid by the private firm Space X to carry Americans into space — a need all the more pressing in the wake of rocket problems that grounded Russia’s space program.
* Wednesday we urged Central Texans to adopt more caution and prevent wildfires.
* Thursday we praised Baylor University for keeping its legal powder dry as the Southeastern Conference pressured it and other Big 12 schools to sign legal waivers allowing Texas A&M to leave the Big 12 and join the SEC. Baylor’s move draws a line in the sand and raises serious questions about the state of college athletics.
* Our Letter of the Week comes from the Rev. Nathan L. Stone, saluting New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s decision to bar clergy-led prayer at the 9/11 memorial service: “A parade of clergy offering prayers ends up being more of a show of ostentatious and often competitive piety. One religious teacher encourages us to avoid that by praying privately ‘in our closets.’ ” Stone is referring to Jesus.
* Our Quote of the Week comes from state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson on a bid by Baylor University to halt a possible breakup of the Big 12: “Folks are angling toward these mega-conferences, which is discouraging. Student-athletes shouldn’t be cash cows, and parents should be able to get around and see their games.”
Finally, we got a laugh from a colleague who cautioned us against watching the Republican presidential candidate debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday and taking a drink every time that Reagan was mentioned. By our count, Reagan was invoked 20 times.
