Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints — yours and ours
The Tribune-Herald editorial board faced the inevitable this week: Texas A&M University’s declaring its intention to leave the Big 12 Conference next year, throwing a century of tradition to the wind for a shot at joining the Southeastern Conference. We pressed Big 12 leaders to show more resolve, imagination and moxie in forging a dynamic conference built to thrive and endure. Also:
* Sunday we argued for $10 million from the Texas Transportation Commission to at long last begin frontage-road improvements along hectic Interstate 35 through Waco. This crucial project is ignored at our peril.
* Monday we urged McLennan County commissioners to address courthouse renovations in a more prioritized, incremental way, especially when faced with yet another $1.2 million in roof repairs.
* Tuesday we expressed astonishment at Lorena City Manager Billy Clemons’ poor judgment in posting insensitive comments about gays and blacks on Facebook.
* Friday we voiced dismay at more wrangling between the White House and U.S. House Speaker John Boehner about the timing of President Barack Obama’s speech on jobs. This just proves playground politics still dominates the nation’s capitol.
* Our Letter of the Week from Mark Fallon expresses outrage Aggies are leaving the Big 12: “Are they doing this all for the money? How can a school with so many traditions throw away the most enduring tradition of them all? Reveille will roll over in his grave. And the Longhorns will swear for the next 100 years that the Aggies left because A&M was too scared to play them.”
* Our Quote of the Week is from Lorena Police Chief Tom Dickson, defending some special accommodations for city drug dog Zahra: “It is not a pet. It is a working dog and you have to have a strong, strong bond between the handler and the canine. They aren’t like a car. You can’t just park them overnight and then come back to it the next morning.”
Finally, we’ll try not to read anything grim into the fact today is International Vulture Awareness Day at Cameron Park Zoo.
