EDITORIAL: Weekly recap of opinions, views and thoughts
As furor over tea party activists, FOX News, the NAACP and the White House dominated the national scene this past week, the Tribune-Herald editorial board focused on local and state issues, including the departure of a local school superintendent.
* Sunday we pleaded with Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Gov. Rick Perry to show real political courage and pursue redistricting reform by taking the process of redrawing political districts out of the hands of lawmakers — a clear conflict of interest, and a horribly distracting one — and placing it in the hands of a nonpartisan panel.
* Monday we marveled at the amazing amount of goodwill being done by us and for us in Waco, even amidst the economic doldrums. Terrific examples: the first-ever visit by 230 youths in World Changers, putting roofs on homes in North Waco, and the Be a Super Hero: Team Sarcoma 5K Race at Indian Spring Park, raising more than $11,000 for sarcoma cancer research.
* Tuesday we greeted new traffic signals around town, complete with blinking yellow arrows, designed to keep us from idling in left-turn lanes at overlong signals, spewing more exhaust into our air.
* Wednesday we admitted little surprise at Superintendent Roland Hernandez’s announced departure from the Waco Independent School District to take a job in Corpus Christi, even though he denied such prospects three weeks ago. Very badly handled, we say, though we wish him well.
* Thursday we saluted the wisdom of city leaders in Hewitt in purchasing land for various purposes, including police, fire and library services, but urged caution in going too far in ignoring last fall’s city election on such matters. Considering the town is landlocked, it’s shrewd to buy land now, in case Hewitt residents decide to do right by their police, firefighters and library patrons.
* Friday we welcomed thousands for tomorrow’s TriWaco, a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event we like because it plays wonderfully on local assets, including 100-year-old Cameron Park and the historic Brazos.
