EDITORIAL: Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints — yours and ours
The Tribune-Herald editorial board this week longed for cooler temperatures while wondering about the sanity of playing football in 100-plus-degree weather.
* Sunday we cheered teachers starting a new school year amid financial cuts, staff layoffs and challenging benchmarks for academic success. Waco ISD board president Pat Atkins and Midway ISD Superintendent Brad Lancaster also offered their views.
* Monday we encouraged students and their families to recognize the community’s investment in the new $70 million University High School. Students should make a few commitments of their own, too.
* Tuesday we reveled in the defeat of Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi and the European powers helping make it happen.
* Wednesday we acknowledged the austere realities facing private institutions of higher learning and Baylor University President Ken Starr’s $100 million scholarship endowment drive to help students struggling to finance their education.
* Thursday we steadied ourselves after a rare major earthquake along the East Coast. We marveled again at this living, breathing planet, complete with moving parts.
* Friday we marked the beginning of the almighty football season at the Kick Off Luncheon. We saluted the awarding of the Dave Campbell Award to former Tribune-Herald sportswriter Hollis Biddle.
* Our Letter of the Week comes from Stuart Smith, angry that Texas A&M would put its interests in the SEC ahead of fellow Texans: “As an institution that receives significant funding from state taxpayers, you would think that (A&M President) Loftin and A&M might do what is best for the entire state rather than just themselves. But if A&M wants to go it alone and do what is best just for them, then they should do so without taxpayer support from the rest of us.”
* Our Quote of the Week comes from former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, responding to a question at the annual Kick Off Luncheon at the Ferrell Center about how he spends his retirement: “Sleep until noon and then it’s time for your nap.”
