The Tribune-Herald editorial board joined other Americans this week in reflecting on the 9/11 losses, not just in terms of life but in the unity and resolve that fired us in the days afterward. We wondered if it was possible to regain those sentiments 10 years later. On Sunday we also offered a variety of insights by local and syndicated columnists.

* Tuesday we suggested new leadership to bring to fruition the local “Enduring Freedom” memorial announced back in 2002 as a tribute to the fallen of 9/11. For a number of reasons, the project is far from completion.

* Wednesday we gave President Barack Obama some credit for his jobs plan but asked why other arms of his administration continue to destroy the jobs he hopes to create. Example: some 500 jobs involved with the Big Brown power plant threatened by EPA regulations.

* Thursday we championed the Breakfast in the Classroom initiative at selected Waco and Connally campuses to get breakfast into students from impoverished backgrounds. After all, it’s hard for youths to learn when their stomachs grumble from hunger.

* Friday we celebrated the Hewitt City Council’s compromise that took into account both concerns by residents about tax hikes during a dismal post-recession period and long-delayed raises for loyal city employees.

* Our Letter of the Week comes from businessman Peter Kultgen expressing his dismay at the president’s jobs speech being slated to accommodate the Green Bay Packers-New Orleans Saints matchup: “I recognize the president and current Congress are not held in high regard by many of our citizens at the moment. However, respect for the office and the institutions and regard for the welfare of our nation would seem to be of more importance than a slight delay in a football game.”

* Our Quote of the Week comes from Joyce Murphy, reflecting on how national unity in the wake of the 9/11 attacks gave way to widespread polarization: “It’s a shame. It should have brought us to a better place.”

Finally, we invite you to celebrate Constitution Day today by actually reading it.
