EDITORIAL: Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints — yours and ours

The Tribune-Herald editorial board reveled in the 2-inch rainfall that marked the start of this week, complete with lightning and thunder, then got down to further intrigue surrounding the Big 12. Also:

* Sunday we suggested that our state leaders show the commitment and investment in water issues that the city of Waco has for decades. And don’t think one night’s rainfall changes things.

* Monday we praised Waco police for working with two of our area’s recyclers, Lipsitz & Co. and CMC Recycling, in improving a city ordinance to battle copper theft.

* Tuesday we outlined why, athletically and academically, Baylor University is a viable contender for any conference in this crazy business of musical chairs involving athletic conferences and superconferences.

* Wednesday we said the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decision to approve parole for Stephen Palacios Jr. six months into his eight-year sentence was overly lenient, considering he absconded with his son and lived on the lam for 17 years, cheating the boy’s mother of the right to raise her child.

* Thursday we condemned the class warfare that Democrats are whipping up.

* Friday we hoped the very best for new leadership and a more proactive league after the Big 12 was again saved from collapse.

* Our Letter of the Week comes from Jerome Lauderdale of Waco, who lamented an attack on President Barack Obama in a 9/11 epistle: “Honestly, I don’t care if President Barack Obama is Muslim or not or what his religious views are. I want to see what he does for the people of this country — not where or what he worships.”

* Our Quote of the Week is from the Aggies who lit up a local billboard poking fun at Baylor University for threatening Texas A&M’s rush to join the Southeastern Conference: “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s conference deal.” Aside from the fact no one at Baylor covets the SEC, we can think of a commandment that A&M definitely broke.

Finally, we were relieved at a new Baylor study that seems to suggest God loves liberals and conservatives alike. Go figure!
