EDITORIAL: Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints — yours and ours
Between trying to stay cool this week, the Tribune-Herald editorial board wondered if warring camps on Capitol Hill would truly hold to the debt-crisis agreement forged, alas, at the last minute, after much economic damage had been done.
* Sunday we praised Waco Independent School District Superintendent Bonny Cain for scrutinizing all programs, no matter what, as a $3.2 million shortfall looms in the WISD budget.
* Monday we expressed rare glee at the unusually dignified and thoughtful meeting of the State Board of Education, even as it handled the divisive issue of evolution.
* Tuesday we lamented the crisis-management style of elected leaders in Washington, both the president and Congress.
* Wednesday we reminded citizens that we are all on the front lines when it comes to terrorism, as an observant gun store clerk proved by tipping off law enforcement about a plot to detonate bombs near Fort Hood.
* Thursday we blasted state lawmakers for taking money designated to help the poor pay electric bills and using it to balance the state budget. Fellas, that’s not why we’re paying a buck extra on our utility bills!
* Friday we saluted an innovative program funded by the Rapoport Foundation that allows clients of the Family Health Center to enroll in exercise programs at the YMCA. Sometimes sweat is truly the best medicine.
* Our Quote of the Week comes from Dr. Roland Goertz, chief executive officer of the Family Health Center, explaining to the Waco City Council how his staff manages with deep cuts in funding from state and federal sources: “It’s not easy. Some of it involves a lot of prayer and thought.”
* Our Letter of the Week comes from Cathy Owen of Waco, who echoed several of our readers in voicing utter disdain for our elected officials and their shenanigans the past several weeks during the debt ceiling brawl. After outlining what she witnessed, she added: “If any American who holds an actual job failed as miserably as our lawmakers have done, they would be fired.”
