EDITORIAL: Weekly recap of opinions

Local points of pride including philanthropist Brian Pardo and the Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce dominated the attention of the Waco Tribune-Herald editorial board this week:

* Sunday we encouraged efforts to find a replacement for former Waco schools Superintendent Roland Hernandez. Our advice: Seek an educator with experience in dealing with inner-city issues including poverty, reflecting problems we certainly face in Waco; has in his or her career shown great transparency and accessibility in dealing with the public and news media; shows a respect for ethnic diversity; and understands the great need for classroom discipline.

* Monday we voiced excitement about a new program, Thrive Business Mentors, sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, that puts relatively new entrepreneurs together with business veterans who can help steer them around some of the pitfalls of business and offer insights into what it takes to realize success. Our only question: What took y’all so long to come up with this worthy-sounding program?

* Tuesday we saluted Laveda Brown and the Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce, championed this summer by the National Black Chamber of Commerce as Chamber of the Year. It bested 147 other groups for the national honor.

* Wednesday we praised businessman and philanthropist Brian Pardo for his $500,000 gift to the Rapoport Academy Public School for renovation of Grant Hall as a creative arts facility. Pardo refused to name the hall for himself, choosing instead to honor his longtime pal, attorney Vance Dunnam.

* Thursday we suggested an amendment in the $26 billion state aid bill passed by Congress this week overstepped what’s right and legal in mandating spending levels in our state budgets. That’s the business of our state lawmakers, not Congress — as if Congress would know about budgeting anyway.

* Friday we praised Precinct 1 Commissioner Kelly Snell and others for showing ingenuity in trying to save money in a tight $118 million budget set during lean times.
