EDITORIAL: Wear your green and gold this weekend

Friday March 26, 2010

It goes without saying that we’ll be wearing green and gold today, following Thursday’s call by Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy that we all show support for Baylor’s men’s and women’s basketball teams as they begin their historic Sweet 16 weekend of fierce competition — the men playing St. Mary’s College at 6:27 tonight in Houston, the women taking to the court to play the Tennessee Lady Vols at 11:04 a.m. Saturday in Memphis.

But allow us a minute to thank Kristin Jack, associate minister at Central Christian Church, who put the bug in our mayor’s ear about issuing a proclamation making today and tomorrow days to wear green and gold. The irony: The local minister is a devout Horned Frog fan. When she joined the mayor at Thursday’s press conference for the proclamation, she naturally came dressed in purple, Texas Christian University’s color.

Kristin promises she’ll forsake purple for green and gold today but will draw the line at wearing any shirt with “Baylor University” on it.

Husband Justin explains her loyalties: “That’s like asking an Aggie to wear burnt orange.”
