EDITORIAL: Tuesday night big for Sarah Palin fans, but even bigger for Care Net

Thursday September 16, 2010

Our congratulations go to Care Net Pregnancy Center of Central Texas, which Tuesday night threw what may have been the most anticipated, actively discussed fundraiser of the year in Waco. Its banquet attracted at least a couple thousand people (final tallies aren’t in yet), complete with a marquee headlined by political activist and former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Best of all, the event’s success allows Care Net to double its budget and expand its mission, which permits women to seek out options involving pregnancy and sex. Care Net CEO Deborah McGregor has said the fundraiser may allow Care Net to hire more staff, enlarge its facilities, launch an aggressive advertising campaign to reach more clients and possibly offer transitional shelter for some clients.

Yes, some Tribune-Herald readers adore Sarah Palin for her folksy persona, championing of Republican women candidates and fiercely conservative dogma; others dismiss her as a political gadfly symbolic of everything that’s wrong with today’s Republican Party and politics. Tuesday night, though, her obvious charisma was immediately felt throughout Ferrell Center, especially when she warmly focused on Care Net’s worthy mission with her own winning recollections as a mom.

Palin was the dynamic presence that evening, just as presidential candidate Mike Huckabee was at last year’s banquet. Yet, after all the conversation they sparked across town, after all the pictures they posed for alongside adoring fans, after each had left for other halls and other vistas, the great cause of philanthropy had once more been advanced, and the Care Net mission was just a little bit better understood by those who stand most to gain from it.
