EDITORIAL: Tip of the wings
About 200 former Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) were in Washington on Wednesday to accept the Congressional Gold Medal recognizing their efforts in World War II.
The medal — the highest civilian honor Congress bestows — honors WASPs living and dead. After the ceremony, the medal goes to the Smithsonian. Each former pilot or family member representing them gets a bronze replica.
Often overlooked, these gutsy pilots flew military planes from aircraft factories to air bases, towed targets for dangerous artillery practice and moved cargo.
A tip of the wings, then, to these remarkable women and to Nancy Parrish, daughter of former WASP pilot Deanie Parrish, for leading Waco-based Wings Across America in helping raise funds so each former pilot or her family got a replica medal. We hope also that Deanie and Nancy enjoyed the trip.
