EDITORIAL: Smart move by Judge Strother
We’re all for rolling thunder, but the very idea of a thousand motorcycles roaring around McLennan County Courthouse all day on July 19 in a show of outrage isn’t exactly the best way to ensure justice.
We applaud District Judge Ralph Strother’s decision this week to quietly move up a court date to hear a plea deal to place a legally blind motorist on deferred probation in the traffic death of motorcyclist Richard Craig Schroeder.
The plea bargain quite understandably incensed motorcyclists statewide. Many vowed to circle the courthouse come July 19.
Strother, noting that his is “a court of law, not a court of public opinion,” smartly moved the hearing date to this week, rejected the plea deal, then set a proper trial for August.
By the way, if you’re really looking for the court of public opinion, you’re looking at it.
