EDITORIAL: Serving our seniors
The Home Technology Tips Fair held Wednesday at McLennan Community College was a great way to lure seniors out of the house and get them to sign up to volunteer in our community.
Hosted by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program — a federally and state-funded program housed at MCC — the fair targeted seniors who needed help with technical gadgets. Seniors were trained for free in how to operate iPods, cell phones and other equipment.
In return, RSVP used it as an opportunity to recruit senior volunteers.
The program benefits seniors by getting them out, and benefits our community by filling jobs for free. More than 1,200 volunteers serve a six-county area, including McLennan County. They logged 130,000 hours, or $2.7 million worth of service, last year.
Now, that’s serving all!
