EDITORIAL: Precautions, please!
This probably goes without saying, but one of our readers asked that we say so anyway: Coaches, trainers and parents this year should be especially wary of the summer heat under the proverbial Friday night lights.
That’s solid advice. High school athletes in Texas are accustomed to training and practicing in the dog days of summer, but this year has offered especially bracing challenges with temperatures regularly surpassing 100 degrees.
The Tribune-Herald sports department says a few area high schools have opted to start their games later, but most are holding to their usual Friday night start times.
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report says football prompts more nonfatal, heat-related emergency room visits than any other activity in the nation. That should be enough for our coaches and trainers to take some extra precautions at the start of this new season.
