EDITORIAL: One sweet bike ride
The Skittles Waco Wild West Century bike ride tomorrow promises to be a sweet ride for all — especially those who can endure 50 miles or more, earning themselves a stop at the Mars Snackfood candy factory where they can load up on Skittles.
It’s also a sweet deal for those in need of life-saving bone marrow transplants, as ride proceeds benefit the Be the Match Foundation, which types and matches bone marrow donors.
The foundation will be taking free and painless cheek sample swabs to match potential donors today at Indian Springs Park from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Last year the ride raised $5,000 for the foundation. About 1,300 riders participated. Some took part in the leisurely family 10-mile ride downtown, while others took on the challenging 100-mile course which passes by Mother Neff State Park and President Bush’s Crawford ranch.
“It’s a lot of work but it’s a lot of fun,” said Rickey Taylor who is on the Century bike ride board. Taylor plans to go the distance and then eat some candy. He urges others to do the same and register at wacowildwest.com. Sweet!
