EDITORIAL: Obama should drop challenge to job-creating AT&T merger

Last summer we added our voice to those backing AT&T’s mighty merger with T-Mobile because it promises to bring wireless coverage to rural stretches such as those in our area. But there’s another good reason for supporting this $39 billion merger. And it’s especially relevant as the president presses his case for creating jobs.

AT&T vows to bring to the United States some 5,000 call center jobs now outsourced overseas. Since the economic crisis that erupted in 2008, no other company has promised to create that number of jobs. Plus, infrastructure work from the merger could create tens of thousands more jobs — and at a critical time for our nation.

Considering that the unemployment rate is often a deciding factor in presidential races, we can think of a host of good reasons for Obama officials to drop their legal challenge to this merger. Indeed, the very jobs they save might be their own.
