EDITORIAL: Luck of the Irish

Only time will tell if Waco is ready for an Irish-styled pub downtown, but several Tribune-Herald staffers dutifully joined a standing-room-only crowd at the grand opening of Barnett’s Pub on Wednesday night. No less than 88-year-old, Irish-born Monsignor Mark Deering blessed the pub before turning the place over to revelers both young and old.

We hope the time is ripe for such an establishment. Neither bar nor honky-tonk, Barnett’s Pub seeks to cultivate an engaging place for quiet conversation, food and simple libations downtown. No doubt foot traffic involving folks leaving work downtown on weekdays will be critical to its long-term success.

Granted, the place wasn’t very quiet the other night, though proprietor Tom Chase wouldn’t have had it any other way. It was, after all, St. Patrick’s Day, and everyone was dressed in green (including Chase) and making merry.

One of Chase’s family members jokingly told us the longtime insurance executive had two dreams in life — to get a sailboat and take to the Caribbean and to open an Irish-styled pub in Waco.

The jury’s out on the wisdom of Chase’s decision to pursue the latter rather than the former. But we hope to do all we can to encourage its success and to rally others to the cause.

With the luck of the Irish, he may well succeed.
