EDITORIAL: Lorena teen just fiddlin' around
The sweet sounds from 17-year-old Mia Orosco, of Lorena, just keep coming.
On June 23, the teen won the junior division at the National Old Time Fiddle Association Contest held in Weiser, Idaho. Along with a trophy and $350 cash prize, Mia can now lay claim to being the nation’s best junior fiddler.
The soft-spoken teen (who packs a big sound) last year took second at this competition. In 2009, she won the junior state championship and in November was selected to perform with other American musical prodigies in National Public Radio’s “From the Top.”
The program aired on KWBU-FM on Feb. 2. Although it was recorded at Baylor, Mia was the only local musician who performed.
She’ll be competing at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Festival on Nolan Creek at Yettie Polk Park in Belton.
