EDITORIAL: Let's make the Games of Texas a success

Tuesday July 20, 2010

Hosting the 2010 Games of Texas next month in Waco is the type of economic boom our community needs, and needs badly.

So everyone should consider their part in making this a success, Waco-style.

Volunteers are needed at several venues at the Aug. 5-8 event that features 14 state championship sporting events through the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation.

About 7,000 athletes (plus families) are due, which could have a $3.5 million impact on our economy.

So sign up to be a timer at the swim meet, pass out water at the track meet or help athletes line up for Friday’s opening ceremony and downtown parade at Fourth Street and Austin Avenue. The parade ends at Indian Spring Park with a big fireworks show that promises to be a blast for all.

Young, energetic helpers are especially needed to run score sheets, Waco recreation superintendent Jeff Goodman tells us.

To volunteer, call 750-8080. See you there!
