EDITORIAL: Heroic designs for a heroic figure
Prospects for East Waco keep improving. Certainly, all 29 artists and design firms who submitted sketches for the $1 million memorial to local Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller on the banks of the Brazos River rate our thanks, and admiration, including the five whose works are now deemed finalists.
Some of us got a look at the finalists at the weekly Fred Batts luncheon this week. The vision goes far beyond a mere statue of Miller, including designs saluting the Navy with whom he became a national hero. Some make imaginative use of the Brazos itself. One also honors operatic singer Jules Bledsoe, another Waco native who broke racial barriers.
We invite you to check them out at wacotrib.com. Then, if you’re as inspired as we are, consider giving to the memorial committee fundraising drive now in gear, headed by Lyndon and Kay Olson.
