EDITORIAL: Heart and soul
John Wood, former pastor of First Baptist Church of Waco, sounds as amazed as anyone about the honor, but those of us who know about his medical mission work have nothing but praise for the man.
Wood this week receives Ukraine’s Presidential Merit Award, which, according to the Ukrainian Embassy, is presented to those who have “gone far beyond the call of duty in their service to Ukraine.”
Through two organizations he heads, Wood ensures a steady supply of medical equipment to the struggling republic. He also spearheads a physician exchange.
The chief U.S. partner in this exchange is Waco’s Providence Health Center, whose doctors have helped train Ukrainian physicians in various specialties, including heart surgery.
Which proves what’s good for the heart is good for the soul, especially in the Rev. Wood’s endeavors.
